The Lantern Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the 1st month of the Chinese Lunar year. This symbolically ends the Chinese New Year activities. The 15th day is usually a full moon day as well.
The origins of this colourful festival is not exactly known as there are many legends revolving around it, however it has been in practice for over 2000 years. Though the legends are diverse, one thing is common and that is that it was always a method in which the wrath of the gods or emperor was thwarted by pretending that the villages were already on fire. This illusion was created by the hanging of lighted red lanterns in every house and the lighting of firecrackers. Thus in every legend, once the destruction of the village was avoided through this act, it became an annual practice.
The concept is still the same, 2000 years down the line. However the sophistication of the lanterns and the aid of technology have helped to make the Lantern Festival one of the most colourful, breathtaking and awe inspiring festivals to witness. These lanterns also contain various riddles for people to solve, usually about prosperity, unity and so on.
Traditionally it was only the red lanterns that were used. However in the modern day, many an animal shape – like the dragon fly, butterfly, dragon, lion - have taken its place amongst the lanterns. In some instances the lanterns are even made out of ice!
Apart from the lanterns – which is an important part of the festival - there is also the eating of rice flour dumplings, called Tangyuan or Yuanxiao. These dumplings have either sweet or salty fillings, made from various ingredients.
The entire festival is an experience in itself and should not be missed. The visitor to China during this time could base themselves from such as the Citadines Shanghai Jinqiao. With its many amenities and home facilities such as this, offers business as well as leisure travellers rest, comfort and convenience.
