Looking for anyone that has done some serious biking in all conditions. I am trying to get my brother’s bike in order for the trip. He has a Trek mountain bike and I think all I need to do is put on some road tires and road handle bars. Will he have problems with hot hot road pavement?
I think we can design a way for him to pull the stroller until steep hills where I can unlatch and push it. I am just looking for any advice out there from experienced biking road warriors on how to prepare him and the bike.
I’ve done some reading on desert hiking and am getting the idea that the most important way to prepare is being able to erect a shelter/shade in the hot part of the day. Also to wear layers of loose breathable clothing and protect eyes and head at all times no matter what. I will be discussing my options with my bro this weekend about post Dallas travel. He may (or may not) want to stop at Dallas, I can’t predict how he will take to the journey. That is why post Dallas strategy is on hold till I have some answers.

Jaybo,
I bike everywhere in all conditions!
Road Tires on the Mountain Bike will be fine. Given the Distances he may be traveling, He needs Extra Tubes (I would say several) and a patch kit for the severest of emergencies.
A good saddle (seat) that he can ride long distances would also be ideal. The handlebars are not necessary, but would be a comfort thing (I am on standard MT Bike Handlebars and Street tires).
To Bad you can’t trabe in the stroller for one that is compatible with a bike (or maybe you can look into that) and jogging.
You have my number if you have any questions or just email me.

Jay,
I’d also look into “hybrid” tires. They are a little more substantial (wider) than a typical road bike tire, but they are smooth for friction reduction. If you are converting a mountain bike, these are the best option (especially if your brother isn’t used to biking a lot).
Any bike shop will be able to help you out with that…

Just got back from China for the holidays and am doing some catch-up on the site. You may have already figured it out or made up your mind, but there is a group from Baylor University that will be biking from Texas to Alaska in the Spring/Summer: . I’ve referred them to your site and now you to their site. I don’t know what, if any, help they can give you but at the very least it’s an interesting site/idea.
