i adopted a soldier.. wow people i figured you would have better ideas then this
when deployed, one thing that soldiers miss is variety. Understand that everything that is available in Shopette is the same stuff that they sell at the PX on the FOB. So look for more specialized things that can't be found at a PX. Send him things that are specific to a hobby or interest that he has. You can also send something that will remind him of someplace nice that you both have visited.
Headlamps are a very popular item. They are ridiculously useful. Petzl makes a whole line of them with flip up red lenses that Soldiers love http://www.petzl.com/en/outdoor/headlamps/compact-tactikka . If he is in a combat MOS get him a set of surefire ear plugs. http://www.surefire.com/EP3-Sonic-Defenders I had a couple pair. They were awesome, and everyone coveted them.

Ahhhh, when I first read your post I assumed you were a wife or GF. If your relationship is more casual I better suggest items that are less expensive! Letters are always welcome. Books and magazines are nice (second hand ones are fine). Candy and food that will not melt or go bad in transit is good too.

I favor Hammer Gel. My favorite flavors are raspberry and orange. Don't get the espresso or the chocolate. they taste like butt.
